Hyperbolic Reformulation Approach to Enable Efficient Simulation of Groundwater Flow and Reactive Transport

We apply Cattaneo's relaxation approach to the one-dimensional coupled Boussinesq groundwater flow and advection-diffusion-reaction equations, commonly used in engineering applications simulate contaminant transport subsurface. The diffusion-type governing equations are reformulated as a hyperbolic system, augmented by an equation that can be interpreted momentum balance. hyperbolization enables efficient unified computation of primary variable its gradients, for example piezometric head unit discharge equation. An Roe scheme is solve system. hyperbolized system studied set steady state transient test cases with idealized geometry. These confirm equivalence original formulation. larger time step size verified theoretically means stability analysis numerically cases. Finally, reach-scale application across river meander considered. This case shows performance holds more realistic problems, relevant water resources management.
